Bilingual Education

Te Tahu Rua Reo is our bilingual (Maori/English) unit which was established to provide an option for children wishing to learn Te Reo Maori me ona tikanga.  Initially providing a progression for children graduating from St Albans School's bilingual unit, we have long been a drawcard for children throughout the wider area.  For sixteen years we have produced children with a great love and comfort for Te Reo and Tikanga (custom and protocol) Maori.  Our children have excelled at the Christchurch Schools' Cultural festivals, the Christchurch Primary Schools Kapa haka competition - Ranga Ihi, and at the Manu Korero (whaikorero/speech) events.
Level Two Language level: Our class has responded to the needs of our families by providing a "Level 2" language environment.  This means the class has a 50-80% delivery of Te Reo Maori rather than our previous 80-100%.  This makes the class a realistic option for new learners of Te Reo as well as those with previous learning.   The important criteria for entry to Te Tahu Rua Reo is (a) that the child wants to learn Te Reo and tikanga Maori while covering the same curriculum as a mainstream classroom, and (b) that the whanau (family) is supportive of the child and class.
* Each year several of our children graduate from TTRR having achieved Level One NCEA.
*The TTRR class is retains full inclusion in wider school events, but has their kaupapa (guiding principles) as a valued and special added dimension to their learning.
